FEARFUL CALAMITY.

One of the most appaling catastrophes for many years past occurred at Sunderland last night. A children* .< fete was being held during the evening in the Yicroria Hall, fully iwo thousand being present’ The entertainment having ended, the children were leaving the building, when a false alarm ot fire was raised. A panic ensued and a rush was made for the staircase, in descending which many fell and were trampled upon bv those following. The outlet became blocked, and before the panic could be allayed and the staircase cleared one hundred and eighty had been crushed to death and many others seriously injured. The calamity has caused profound distress and gloom over the district, and sympathy is universally expressed for the sufferers and their relatives.
