— Beneath the rule of men entirely jas* ( The pen is mightier than the sword. ' ‘ ■■ • ;
Thb Hon. Mr Rolleaton, when at Alexandra at the beginning of the year, was interviewed by a number of the residents, who pointed out to him the chief want of the dis-trict—-timber for mining and other purposes —and respectfully requested him to use his influence in getting the money vote]of last session expended for the opening up of the Waikaia Bush by tracks into the valley of the Molyneux. The hon. gentleman, after courteously listening to the arguments adduced in favor of the expenditure, satisfied the deputation by promising that the Government would send up in the course of a few weeks some oompetentperson to examine and report on the whole subject, 1 After a lapse of two or three months {not weeks) the promise is to be fulfilled, and Mr Gordon, the Inspector of mines, on Monday next will arrive at Alexandra to commence his duty. Now, with the appointment we are perfectly satisfied, as from Mr Gordon’s long and varied experience on the goldfields, both in New Zealand and Australia, he is qualified in every respect to make such a report; but we most decidedly object to the time of the year selected for making the journey, as the part of the country over which the track is to be made is covered with snow. It looks very like trying how not to do it, and if the report, under the circumstances is unfavorable, no jone will be less surprised than ourselves. The putting the question off from time to time by the Government looks asjif they wished the vote to lapse, and lapse it assuredly will if something definite is not done before the financial year closes, and the present season being so far advanced as to preclude the whole of the work being done, the most politic thing would be to get the road surveyed np to the snow line and so much of it made, then when fine weather again comes there should be but little trouble in getting the work completed.
