NIHILISM IN RUSSIA.

Intelligence which throws a startling light upon tho ramifications of the Nihilist conspiracy in Russia has just reached St. Petersburg from Vladimir, in the government of Volhynia. It appea-s that several persona occupying high social and official positions in the district, have recently received a number of threatening letters signed by the “ Socialist Committee.” One of these documents was addressed to no less a person than the Governor himself, and threatened him with death unless he forwarded a sum of 3000 roubles to a place named by a recent day. A trustworthy person was sent to the appointed spot, which was carefully watched by a strong body of subordinate officials. At midnight the mysterious author of tho letter made his appearance to receive the money, and was recognised by the watchers, to their utter bewilderment, as the chief of police. He was instantly arrested, and remains in close confinement. On examination it was found that his writing corresponded with those of the threatening letters. Tho affair has causad, an immcnr.o and by no means pleasant sensation, particularly in official circles. Russian society seems to have

recovered from the terror of the Nihilistsi although, according to some accounts, scarcely had the date been fixed for tho CzaPq coronation before a solemn warning, printed on fine vellum, reached Alexander Alexandreivioh, to the effect that, unless he complied with certain demands cate, goiieallyset forth, the Revolutionary Excel live Committee would revert to pre-viously-employed means of intimidation.
