Byrne is still detained in custody pending tho arrival of a fresh warrant charging him with complicity in the murder of Field, the juryman, and in the attempt on the life of Judge Lawson. Intelligence is to hand from Antanarariroo that the French gunboat has arrived at Tamatave, the chief port of Madagascar, and that four other war vessels have gone to ports on the north-west coast which ate claimed by the French The Malagaseese are very much excited at this step on the part of France, and are preparing for war. Bombay, March Bth. “ Major ” Tucker, of the Salvation Army, who was arrested here last month while parading the streets, has been sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, and four of his colleagues have beeu fined. INTERCOLONIAL. Melbourne, March 9th. The body of Robert Harding, which was recently found in the water at Brighton with a wound in the throat, has been exhumed, as there are grave suspicions that deceased met his death through foul play. Fater. It is now believe! that Harding committed suicide, and died by drowning after cutting his throat. Parliament stands adjourned to April 3rd. March 12. The weather is now improving, bur, the ground on which the Anglo-Victorian cricket match is being played is thoroughly soaked after yesterday’s rain. Adelaide, March 9tb. The South Australian agricultural statistics for the present season have been pub liahed. They show that 1,820,000 acres under wheat this season yielded an average of four bushels thirty two pounds per acre. After providing for seed and for Home consumption 120,000 tons remain for export. Yields in the northern an' l south eastern districts ranged from ten to thirty tw' nod a-half bu-hola. and this helped to raise the average for the whole colony. Sydney, March 9th. The s.s. Very heavy rain fell here to-day. March 12. The sculling race at Grafton on Saturday between Rash and haycock tor £IOOO resulted in an easy victory for Lnycock by four lengths. The handicap race was won ve r y easily by Macdonald. The steamship Austral is now aafelv at anchor at her old moorings in Neutral Bay, when- Hie sank in November last. Mr Redmond, the Irish agitator, held a meeting at Bathurst on Saturday evening. Tho proceedings were quite orderly.
INTERPROYINCIAL. Auckland, March 12. Re drowning accident, it has been ascertained that Susan Duncan, whose body had been recovered, was seen on the railway wharf after midnight on Saturday, in company with Charles Baker,a seaman, belonging to tho schooner Saxon. They left the wharf in a small dingey, leaving one Elizabeth Diedricht t > await their return ; but Diedricht fell asleep. The dingy got capsized, and two umbrellas l ave been re covered, but there are no signs of Duncan and Baker. Both were under the influence of liquor, Diedricht has told the police she saw Duncan fall over the wharf, but she is so muddle I with drink that the police can make nothing of her story. Typhoid fever is getting prevalent in some parts of the suburbs. The schooner Queen was struck by lightning off Norfolk Island, but the damage was trifling. Napier, March 12 An old lady named Forster, who committed suicide at Waipukurau on Saturday, leaves £23,000 to tho Church of England and a few charities. King Tawhiaois somewhere about Napier but no one appears to know or care exactly where ho is. The Minister of Education has intimated to the Board here that the Government will in this and other districts where there are Normal Schools, pay the expenses of teachers in training attending the Normal School at Wellington. Wellington, March 12. A heavy southerly buster set in again last night, and very heavy rain poured in continuous torrents till this morning. A man named Robert Bolt attempted suicide at Wainui-o-mata yesterday by cutting his throat. He was found hidden away in the bush with his coat ten ibly hacked. Bolt has been committed to the Asylum. Invercargill March 12. Charles Sullivan, who deliberately outraged a girl of 13 years, named Alice Norton, at Waimatnku, near Invercargill, on Saturday week, was captured to-day by Detective Ede in an empty house about seven miles from the scene of the crime. Sullivan has led a miserable life since, being without coat, and having wandered about in fear of arrest. He admits the crime.
