Amongst the Parliamentary papers to band is an abstract of return of receipts and expenditure of the various Counties in New Zealand for the year ending March 31 st, 1882, The return is a markedly bald one, it merely giving the receipts as classed under three heads, and the expenditure classed under five heads. However, it is instructive enough, as the true position of the whole of the Counties is made known. There are altogether 64 Counties, with a total revenue of £220,355 6s lOd, and an expenditure of £318,989 Os 2d, Of these six are exempt from the operation of the Counties Act, and in seven others tho whole Act is uot in force Accordingly and virtually there are 51 Counties only in full operation. In regard to population Annul has the smallest, having only 513, whilst Sclwyn has 34,323, tho largest number. Selwyn also is the richest Comry having a balance in hand of £9lllß Ha 2d, and tho Thames is the poorest, it having an overdraft of £6BO 3s 9d. Wallace, Westland, and also liullcr, have overdrafts respectively of £4403, £2250,.< nd £3766. Of the Counties on the Otago Goldfields, Titapeka is the richest, having a revenue of £10,631 ; Vincent corning next on the list with £9 289; Manietcto mxt with £6,686 ; artd tire Lakes following with £5835 ; whilst the expenditure was, Tnapeka, £15,104 ; Vincent, £11,823; Maniototo, £6820 ; Lakes, &.GS6V. Tuapr ka has an overdraft . f £767 ; Vincent br ing £3-04 in debt; whilst Mauiototo has. a .creditbalanco of £lO4 ; and the Lake, baa £1579.
