Qoodger, of Cromwell, were offered for sale by auct ion on Monday last, by order of thefiegiatrar of the Supreme Cmnt, Mp Horace Bastings wielding th hammer, and with tho exception of the brewery, which was withdrawn, the, highest bid b,-in* 1.175. Parliament has been further (prorogued till 10th April. We have received from Mr John Plum* mer, agent, Sydney, the summer number of the London •* Graphic” for 18S2. Mr Fache rep >rts that he finds at his lato sales that hordes of every class are a perfect drug, but that cattle are looked after at considerably increased rates, this week yearlings realized L2 7s per head, and fair sized beifeis L 3 10a. Ct. Heton, at a late moating of the Roxburgh borough council, is reported to have stated, during a discussion on the question of urging on the Government to at once reconstruct the bridge over the Mnlyneux, that he had authority for saying that the Government were preparing plans for the bridge. From the New Zealand Gazelle of Ist February wo find that arrangements are made by the Telegraph Department for transmitting messages relating to sickness or death after the ordinary offio'al hours on the payment of a double fee. Two-and-sixpence will also be charged for calling on the operator to despatch a message after the ordinary hours, and a fee of 2s for delivery within one mile of the Telegraph Office. As an instance of very good work done by the reapers and binders this season, the North Otago Times mentions that a paddock containing 100 acres of wheat was cat I y two wire-binders in the short space between Monday and Wednesday evening, the average time the machines were at work being 12 hours per diem. Tenders are invited for the construction of four miles of water-race from Drybread to Tinkers. We are informed the successful tenderer will have the option of constructing four other miles. The Job, therefore, is a good one, and should be worth while going for. Scarlet fever is reported to bo still va y prevalent at the Blue Spar, Tuapcka. In connection with this disease it is a noticeab'e fact that while it has run through nearly every family at Clyde, and the same at the B.ue Spur, in every other of tha adjoining towns and centres of population, though it hal its members, yet failed to take a firm hold. The newly-appointed County Clerk, Mr 1 J. T, Evans, arrived in Clyde on Tuesday evening last. We understand ha enters upon his duties on Monday next. A fearful case of suicide occurred recently nt Low Moor, near Bradford (England), and the voluntary victim was quite a young man, who leaped into a blast furnace. Imagine the strength of purpose necessary for a human being to take that awful plunge ; and what a swift, cheap, and c nnplete cro--1 raation ! “ One small bone ” was ail, we are told, that was or could be found of him. What nonsense it is to talk of disadvanf tages of getting drunk, when drunkenness ■ » considered an exons-' for cveiy act of brutality, a g«uw„„ t ‘ !le w ,. it „ r of the * London Talk” in the Argus] rubbed a hot poker over bis wife’s throat and legs, as though it had b-en on embrocation. It was urged, however, in bis defence, that it was one in a fit of “th hortom,” under the influence of winch he had previously been fined for throwing boiling water over .-omebo !y else ; so that be only got six months’ imprisonment. It never strikes the Magistrate in snob eases that the . victims themselves have ‘‘the horrors” under this kind of treatment. A sal accident occurred on January 26 during the afternoon session of the Wesleyan Confe; once at Pirie street Church, nt Adelaide. The debate on the Bible-in-schools question was nearly closed, and a vote was about to ba taken, when the K<w. W. G Patchell, who was seated on tho platform taking part in the discussion, was observe I o fall. He was caught ny those near him, and me Heat assistance was immediacy procured, but proved of no avail, as Mr Patched di: 1 almost immediately. The cause of death was apoplexy. A curious case of a dog being witness in Court is reported from New York. An ac‘or having lost his dog, and afterwards found him, on his claim being disputed, applied to Justice Smith for redress, saying that the dog would prove himself to whom he belonged ; whereupon he made him go through various performances, such as imitating death, dancing, etc., and finally wound up by bowing to the Court, when ihe Judge stated that no further evidence was necessary, and awarded the dog to the iiOtor. A meeting of the Webb Trust Fund Committee was held in Mr Naylor’s office, Clyde, on Tuesday evening last, Rev. Mr Clinton in the chair, when after the Treasurer had stated that subscriptions received up to date amounted to £455 os 91, and that a further sum of £IOO was known to ba in the hands of collectors, it was resolved to take immadiate steps to supply the boy Webb with artificial feet, and also to notify in the Dunedin Daily Times, Tuapeka Times, M unt Ida Chronicle, Cromwell Argus, and Dunstan Timks, that all lists are pt quested to be sent in to the Secretary without delay. The meeting then adjourned. A man named Willcox, recently employed as secretary to tho Permanent Building Society at Lyttelton, has given himself up to tho police at Invercargill for cm* bezzling £.ll, the moneys of the Society, and alio several other smaller sums at different times. The number of rabb'itakins exported from Now Zealand in 1831 was 8,514,685, valnsl at £B4 774, against 7,5(15,616 value! at £66,976, in 1880. There will probably prove to be a further increase in 1832; and at this rate rabbit killing is becoming a moat important industry—less satisfactory, however, than woul-growing. The County Chairmanship dispute that was to be settled at the uext meeting of the Council in March next, is, we are now informed. adjourned till the May meeting, the object being, we believe, to prevent any possible hitch occurring in the settlement of the many weighty matter through there being no Chairman, that will have to be considered between now and then by the Council. If the Council, as a whole, are prepared to allow the present occupant of the office to hoi! the reins during so critical a period in the County, history, and with the hope that he safely weather the storm, we see no reason why the trouble should ever again be renewed. Amongst the correspondence received by us this week is a calendar for the current year, issued by a Mrs Emilia TurnbullPreziosi, of Malta, which also contains particulars of soma of the specialties dealt in by the lady. As we are not likely to pay a visit to Malta to inspect the fair Emilia’s stock of filigree, gold and silver work, Maltese lace, wine, and cigarettes, we shall only b / too pleased to transfer the introductory little piece of cardboard to anyone who proposes taking the journey, or who may think of opening up a correspondence with the lady. Who after this will say that advertising does not pay ? A cricket match will be played at Clyde to-morrow between Clyde and Alexandra teams. Alexandra : W. G. Rees, C. Rees, Moorhead, Williams, Merewether, Pitches, Willcox, Aldred, Dewar, Simmonds, and Robertson. Clyde : M*Donald, M Donnell, Shaw, T. McKay, A. R McKay, Thomson, McConnnchie, Stevens, Ellis, Hogan, Nestor ; emergencies— R. Stewart, W. Heney, T. Hickson. At the Resident Magistrates Court. C yde, on Tuesday last, before Major Keddell, R.M. Messrs Cargill and Anderson were charged by the rabbit Inspector with failing to take effective to abate the growing evil (the increase of the rabbits on their runs) and were mulct in a small fine and costs. At the same court cross actions for assault—Marie v. Holden, and Holden v. Marie—were heard and decided against Marie, who in addition to a fine of L2 and costs, was called upon to find sureties for keeping the peace for 6 mouths, himself in L2O, and two sureties of LlO each. We are particularly requested to acknowe -Ige the receipt of Ll2 ißs from Dr Hyde, of Ophir, as a donation towards the funds of the Dunstan Dis riot H ispital. A meeting of persons favorable to the fo motion of a Fanner’s C üb. and the holding of a show this year, was held in Gavan’a hotel, Ophir, Wednesday evening last. The whole of the surroundings having been taken into consideration, which were considered to be highly favorable, it was resolved—Tuat a club he formed, to he called the Blacks District Farmer’s Club and Agricultural .Society, and that a show i 6 hoi 1 at Blacks on Saturday March 17th, 1833, Mr Thomas Spain undertook the duties of Secretary, and he was instructed to get some subscription lists printed and distributed. Harvesting is getting very general throughout the district, from Bald Hilt Flat to Beck’s While Horse, and the generally expressed opinion is that the crop will be a long way in advance ot the average, bath in quantity and qualify. The principal crop is oats but there are a good many pid locks of wheat, and a few of turnips, the latter of which is looking really splendid. It was at first thought there would he some difficulty experienced in getting hands, hut at the hji r h rates given there appears to he plenty to meet the demand.
