HORRIBLE OUTRAGE AT FIJI.
Murder of Mas Moore. [ A horrible outrage was committed by a Fijian nam°d Q iqa on the person of Mrs Isabella Moore, the daughter of Captain Matighao, on Saturday list (says the Fijian Timas of November 29, received per favour of Captain San ders, of the steamship (Junga, which arrived here on Monday, and it is at pvese t do ibiful if the unfortunate lady will survive the injuiies that have been inflicted on her. On the afternoon ot the day in question, Mrs Moore was sitting on the veiaudah of her house, at Waidau, at tin back of the island, engaged with some fancy work, her husband being absent at the time, when a man approached with an axe in his hand. She asked him what he wanted, and he gave hersome vague reply, while In* cane* up to her within tnWiug distance and then savage'y nt-acked her with the ;'Xe. The first idow na-rowly missed her head and inflicted a horrible gash on her hi east, cutting down to, but glancing off, ihe b m, Ha followed this up with other blows, in attempting to ward off which the defenceless woman rece ved fearful injuries to her arms and hands She then fell down, and the miser ant to complete his murderous work, s'rnck her another savage blow on the hick and then left her for dead. Alter his departure, Mrs Moore contrived to crawl to a inoli tree, under which she fainted. On lecnviring she managed to return to the house and obtain some spirits, portion of which she drank, and then, heaiing the noise of some one near, she took the bo'tlc and started to reach lur father’s house, some three miles distant. With al must incredible courage and strength of purpose she dragged herself onward, keeping up her failing strength , with the stimulant till she reached a creek which it was necessary to cross. Here she met some Fijians, and telling them what had occmred, she asked them to carry her over the creek, but this the •inhuman wre dies refused to do unless she would give them a pound. Ishe promised iheni in the names of her father and her husband, any number of pounds they wanted if they would but help hci ; but as she bad no money with her they refused and loft her to shift for herself. At the IhW extremity of exhaustion she reached lew father's door, and after doing wha « was possible fo do on *be mome it, fbe. lioat was gob ready, and late at night the mutilated victim was brought to Levuka. Hei wounds were at once attended to by Dr Ohio, and she was removed-to the hospital, where she
now lies in a precarious condition, with but faint hope of her recovery. Her fiendish assailant was arrested and brought into town on the following day, and on Monday he was brought before the Court and remanded for eight days. The man is said to be mad, and this is borne out by the fact that he fiercely attacked the police in the station more than once, and broke three pair of handcuffs in succession, as fast as they were put on him. Or. no other assumption can this savage attack be accounted for, though i here are various rumours afloat about land disputes, which we are assured are without foundation. What mikes the tragic occurrence the more sad is that the unfortunate lady had only been married ten days when this brutal attack was made on her.
