It is reported that the Right Hon. Dr Lyon Playfair has resigned office as Chairman of Committee in the House of Com. mons. It is reported that the Right Hon, W. E, Gladstone is seriously indisposed. Dr Clarke, the Premier’s medical adviser, has been summoned to Hawarden. Madrid, January 6. ihe Spanish Ministry has resigned, a split in the Cabinet having occurred upon the question of finance. Paris, January 0. It is announced that the remains of the late General Ghanzy will be accorded a public funeral at the expense of the State. London, January 7. Two hundred thousand persona viewed the body of M. Gambetta while lying in state at the Palais Bourbon. There were enormous crowds of onlookers, and the cemetery was not reached until five hours after the procession started. At the cemetery M. Drisson addressed those assembled, and urged the necessity of union in order to achieve Gambetta’s aspirations. INTERCOLONIAL. Melbourne, January 8. The Dunedin municipal frauds are attracting considerable attention here. Three well-known Melbourne brokers, J. B. Were and' Son, Welder, and Griffiths, have been victimised to the extent of £3501). It has been ascertained that Massey’s wife sold Mr Griffiths waterworks debentures in the name of Louisa Allen. The coupons were subsequently paid in London. Were and Son bought 15 debentures, paying cash to the amount of £1594, which the wife accepted in the name of Lucy Brown. Massey then obtained a draft on New Zealand for £O9O Welder also purchased 13 debentures, paying £1365 cash, and from him Massey got a draft for 1150 on Christchurch. Sydney, January 8. The Marine Board of Inquiry into the •circumstances attending the wreck of the steamship New England, at Clare ice River Heads, on the 27th ult., concluded to-day. The Court found that the vessel was lost through the negligenee of Pilot Smith, and •ordered that his certificate should be cancelled.
