The mem’ ers of the association formed by the claimants of lands in Fiji who were notsa isfied with the decision of the Lands Commi-aion as finally interpreted by the Gove-nor-in-Conncd, asked Her Majesty’s Secret ry of State for the Colonies that a competent tribunal, nnoo elected with the Government of ihe Colony, might he appoints Ito deal with tln-ir claims. The reply, which has been published, is a direct refusal to listen, and the grounds on which the refusal is based are stated to he the reports of the late and p-esenb Governors of Fiji and the observations of Mr Victor Williamson. Mrs Moore, who wan recently assaulted by a Fijian nam-d Gazza, is procreating favourably. The Fijian is committed for trial. The Suva Times speaks very highly of the Poly esians brought by tlie Lorn of ihe Isles from New' Britain and surrounding groups, and pronounces them as fine a sot of men as ev r came to Fiji. If the supply can be depended upon, there is no dcubt that a groat boon has been conferred upon the Colony in the present condition o c an increased demand tor, and a diminishing BUnply of, labourers. Mr. W. Gordon is appointed Commissioner to report on land claims in the island of Rotnmah. Mr J. M. Butt, who for manv years has filled the position of managei of the Bank of New Zealand branch at Lovuka, was presented with a handsome piece of plate on the occasion of his leaving that place lately.
