It is understood that the extension of time in respiC to tenders fur a direct steam service was decided upon lately through representations t eing made that New Zealand uimu Tinics tendering would be placed at a disadvantage owing to the shortness of notice given, and pvt-My because it was thought on reconsideration advisable that the Aaent-gt noral should submit to the Government the full terms on which they propose to invite tenders. Accordingly, full and elaborate instructions were sent to the A rent-general by the San Francisco mail on the sth inst. These he will receive in December, allowing ample time to consult persons at Home most competent to give advice, and to submit to Government thi scheme of proposal drawn up by him as the result of his enquiries and consultation. It is understood that the New Zealand Shipping Company - will tender, and will have a service of their own definitely minting beforehand ; also that the Government have received intimation that the Union Steam Ship Comi pany will be amongst the tenderers, as well l as tho new combination of Shaw Savill and j tho Albion Company.
