OUR NEW GOVERNOR.
Intelligence is cabled trom England that the present Governor of South Australia, Sir William P. D. Jervois, C.P>., G.C.M.G., is to be promoted to the Governorship of New Zealand. 1 Men of the Times gives the following particulars of his Excellency’s career : Sir Wil iam Jervois, is the eldest son ol the late General Jervois, who was Colonel of the 70th Regiment. Tie was born m IS2I. and entered the Royal Engineers in 1839. In 1841 <he was ordered to the Cape of Good Hope, where he remained for seven years, having acted as brigade-major in an expedition against the Boers, and during the Kaffir War he made a military survey and map of Kaffraria, a work of great difficulty ably executed. From 1843 to 18.32 ho emu. manded a company of Sappers at Woolwich and Chatham, an I was afterwards transferred to London as Commanding Roval Engineer. In 1855 lie was appointed to the post of Assistant inspector-general of Fortifications and was elected by Government to be secretary of the Royal Commission appointed to report upon the defences of the country In 18G3 he was sent on a special mission to report on the defences of Canada, Nove Scotia, and New Brunswick, and in 1864 was again sent to Canada in connection with the question of the defences of that province. The Imperial Government undertook to carry out the defences of Quebec on the plan recommended by him. He was also secretary to the Permaneht Defence Committee In 1875 he was appointed Governor of the Straits Settlements, and since 1877 he has I een Governor of South Australia. In conjunction with Colonel Scratch ley, out readers will remember, Bir William Jervois reported upo i the defences of the various Australian Colonies, although he did not then visit New Zealand.
