MINING NEWS.

Dunstan.—The Eureka Dredging Company (late Scotts’ current wheel) are apparently satisfied with the amount of gold they are getting, as they have applied to secure to themselves a mile of the river above Alexandra bridge. On the best of authority wo learn that over since the dredge has been under the management of Andrew Dalzeil, sufficient gold has been obtained to cover all working expenses and leaves surplus for division amongst the shareholders. Kincaid’s big iron dredge is at present in dock undergoing some alterations. It has’ been proved that the new patent washing apparatus was a failure as it does not answer for the river sands; accordingly that has to bo removed and a simple string, which has always proved effective, is to lie established. A pontoon is also to be attached to either side of the hull to keep her steady when both wheels are in work. Tenders have been accepted, we learn, for the building of a spoon dredge, which is to bo located on the Manuheriki(i about a mile labove Alexandra close to Theyersand Beck’s brewery. It has for many years past been known that a heavy deposit of gold was in the Mannherikia, and it is surprising that it has not been tackled ere now. The latest venture in dredging talked about is a phneumatic, but whether anything will come of it is difficult to say. As it is in good hands the probability is it M will become a reality. A deal of activity ▼ Is jU«t now apparent on the eastern slope of the OH Man Range, a good lew claimshaving been token up on the line of reef long

, worked upon by Janies Whyte and. party. Nicholson and party have not yet commenced crushing at the head of the Fraser i River. A gang of men have for some weeks now been out on the ground getting things in readiness. No groat time will, therefore, lapse before the clatter and din of the stampers is heard riverbrating amongst the high latitudes of the Old Man Rock. No great noise is being hoard from Messrs Bennett and Dewar as to their doings at the Conroy’s reef. As they continne to crush it must be paying them. Campbell and pa~ty, at Half Mile Guily, below Alexandra, are busy, with their prospects improving, they have a terrible seat of work to get fairly to work, but when they do there is every prospect of them being well repaid for their labor. Mhiing at Blacks —From want of funds the claim that has been wo-king for the past six months on the Deep Lead, Blacks No 3., we regret has stopped work. An effort will, however, be made to float the claim into a Limited Liability Company. The work done by the company since they started has been all of a prclimin iry yet expensive character, in the shaoe of sinking shafts, opening out main drives, and such like, and just as it was to have been expected they would have commenced to reap a something in return , the want of funds compel them to stop. That there is go'd in the claim there is no doubt, as in opening out drives the company have obtained about 100 ounces ot gold ; it is therefore reasonably to be assumed that with means to still prosecute the work and under a capable manager the understanding should prove a success. Tinkers.—The past season has been particularly favourable for the prosecution of mining in the Matakauui district j th« weather having been mild with no frosts to affect the flow of water in the races, while at the same time there has been sufficient rains and snow on the range tops to keep up a constant and steady supply of water, the chief agent employed there in obtaining the precious metal. Every advantage has been taken of it, and that the labourers will be well remunerated tor their labour there is little question. The Blue Duck claim at Tinkers are now engaged in the pleasing operation of washing up after a six months’ running; from their first box they have taken the very handsome amount of 1040 ounces of gold, and it is currently reported they will obtain another 1000 ounces at least before they finally clear up. The Undaunted Company (known as Murphy’s) and which adjoins the above claim, will shortly commence cleaning up, and they I expect to get fully as much as their neighbours, if not more. All the other claims in the locality are looking well.
