CRICKET.

ALEXANDRA V. BLACKS, A match between the above clubs took place on the Alexandra ground on Saturday last. The competing teams were pretty evenly matched, and considering that it was the first match of the season the play was fair throughout ; with the exception of the fielding on the part of the Alexandra team which was exceedingly weak, and which told its own ta e in the number of extras and stolen runs obtained by Blacks. Having won the toss the Alexandra men went tiist to the wicket and succeeded in putting together 8-1 before they were disposed of. Blacks then went m and ran up a score of 78. In the second innings of tna Alexandra team they were all out for 52, and Blacks in their second innings scored 39 for the loss of 5 wickets when the stumps were drawn at 6 p.m. As it was a one days match the Alexandra team thus won oy six runs on the first innings. The play does not call for further comment, excepting that there was a tendency to dispute the umpires decisions occasionally, which is gieatiy to be deprecated by all true lovers of cricket. IE a person is considered incompetent or prejudiced, either side may object to his acting as umpire, but once appointed, his decisions should be acceded to without dispute, and any interference with an umpire in the peiformance of his duties should be put down at once ; otherwise a fine manly game, which above all others requires the cultivation of the qualities of coolness and good temper in order to obtain proficiency, would soon degenerate into a scene of rowdyism, and fall into deserved disrepute The post of an umpire is an unthankful one at the best, and however much persons may feel annoyed at an adverse decision, they should remember that the least thing an umpire can expect, is that he should be treated with courtesy in the discharge of his duties. The above remarks are mads in the best interests of the cricketers themselves, who will find it much easier to nip such an evil in the bud, than to effect a reform when it has assumed proportions which will render it difficult to control.
