A warrant has been issued at Nelson on October 22 for the arrest of a young man named Francis James Hodgson, who was formerly a clerk in the National Bank He is charged with stealing 500 sovs. A little over n year ago Hodgson was transferred to Christchurch, and after his departure it was found his accounts bad been tampered with, and that £SOO had been taken from the reserve case. It is stated that Hodgson used £2OO of the sum taken to make good deficiency, and that be took tbe balance to Christchurch. After arriving at Christchurch Hodgson was dismissed from the bank and joined the Armed Constabulary, from which he was recently discharged. On coming to Nelson Mr. Black, the manager of the bank, had an interview with Hodgson, who admitted taking the money, and gave information that he had planted a portion of it in St. John’s churchyard, Christcbm cb. On information being sent to Christchurch L 250 was unearthed, and the bank after delaying the matter ultimately decided to prosecute, but the circumstance getting wind in the meantime, Hodgson has so far evaded the police. The body of a man aged about 28 was found in the river Avon on Saturday afternoon, name unknown. He had 2s fid, a pawn ticket, a printer’s setting rule in bis pocket. Ho was attired in dark clothes, and has dark brown hair with a small light beard. Hempton, the commission agent who absconded at Christchurch after committing numerous forgeries, was arrested Springfield last Monday morning. A woman named Julia Obeims attempted to commit suicide at Wellington on Monday afternoon by jumping off the breastwork. She was rescued by two gentlemen who were passing and conveyed her to the lookup. An attempt was made to wreck the Onehunga train on Friday last. A stone waa placed on the rails near Papakaflag station, but it was observed just in time to prevent an accident.
