CLYDE TEMPERANCE MEETING.
A public temperance meeting, in connection with the visit of theG.W.O. and G.W. 8. of the 1.0. G.T. of New Zealand, was hel I in the Town Hall, Clyde, on Thursday the 21st inst. The chair waa occupied by the Hev. J. Lothian. D.D.G.W.C.T. A special session of the Grand Lodge I O.Q.T. was held in the hall previous to the admittance of the public, at which 8 brothers and 2 sisters obtained the Grand Lodge Degree. The Rev. J. N. Battle, in his opening remarks, expressed his pleasure at visiting Clyde, of which he had heard so much, aiid referred to the pluck, perseverance, and industry of the pioneers of the district, evideuces of which were to be seen on every hand. The diink question in its bearings on society, and the effects of temperance on the moral and social well-being of the community were then ably set forth by tim Mr D 0. f’ameron gave some interesting information as to the working and progress of the Good Templar movement since its start in New Zealand, about ten years ago, and bespoke the sympathies of the audience on behalf of the movement which had for its object the amelioration of mankind. Mr G. McNeil, in a few well chosen words, expressed his pleasure at being present to hear Messrs Buttle and Cameron, and rejoiced to see the temperance question receiving so much attention in our midst as evidenced by the large number present that evening. During the evening songs were given by Mesdames Davidson and Crawford, Miss Hastie, and Mr Treseder ; Mr Begg giving a concertina solo, to all of whom a word of praise is due. Votes of thanks were passed to the ladies and gentlemen who had assisted at the meeting. The number present is estimated at between 150 and 200. The National Anthem brought a very enjoyable evening to a close.
