Number of hospitals in New Z ;aland, 28—one at Wanganui, however, failed to supply the information sought for—maintained at a total expenditure of 1,58.064. Of this amount 1 31,53t) wrs contributed by the Government, £5497 by County Councils, L3IS3 by Boroughs, L 8137 by subscriptions and d matinns, L 3 51 G by patients, and 1.4770 from other sources.—leaving a debit balance of L 1361. or rather an expenditure above income of that amount. On the Otago goldfields there are six of these institutions, and in the subjoined table we give their total incomes, expenditure, an ’, the number of patients treated during 1881.

The total number of indoor patients treated was 3947, at an average cost of nearly LIS each.
