A ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOP AND STRONGMINDED WOMEN.
“Strong minded women” receive no sympathy from the Eoman Catholic Bishop of Cleveland, in Ohio. He has issued a public notice threatening with excommunication any woman in his'diocese “ now a member of (he Parn-11 Branch of tire Ladies’ Land League of C eveland who shall attend any meeting of such Ladies’ Land League in what is known as Parnell Hall, or in any other hall or place.” He also declares he will excommunicate any woman who after the publication of his notice shall j dn the Ladies’Land League. ‘‘When,’'he savs, “ the question is squarely raised on eho issing be ween female modesty and pretended patriotism, I then place myself on the side of female modesty ; and when it comes to defen ling rhe female modesty of my flock as against the brazm umvomanliness of female politicians. I accept tho gage, and see that no Ca r h'lie woman within my diocese shall turn herself into a brawling politician. If there are wmnan of this kin 1 and if there are women in Cleveland who will turn themselves into brawling politicians, then they shall know that they are so no longer. No vom»n within the diocese of Cleveland shall at the same time ho a Catholic and a brawling politician The Catholic woman must live within the modesty of home ; she must bo an orament to the family circle ; and her womanly delica y and gentle naiure shall mot he tahrted wir hj the noisy brawl of the virago. Woman must be woman. Women shall not be p -r----mitted to unaex themselves and at the same time, within the limits of the diocese of Cleveland, remain members of the Catholic Church ” The a rong minded wW-nen in this country, wo are afrai 1 wmld make short wm-k of any Bishop.
