SPECIAL TEL I CRAMS. (From our own Correspondent.) Dunedin, August 24, 7.50 p.m. The Frisco mail is expected in town this evening. James Lucas, a carter, was yesterday, at Caversham, kicked in the chest by his horse by which death was instantaneous. At a meeting of the Temperance Hall Co. yesterday, it was resolved to sell the property. Mr Hutchison will move in the House for reform in the constitution of the Legis lative Council, that it shall be partly by nomination and partly by election. At the Land Board, yesterday, the application of Ewen Cameron to surrender lease of run at Wakatipu was referred to Govern • ment. William Asher’s application for a gold "mining lease at Bannockburn was approved Certificate of application for agri‘ cultural lease at Wakefield was granted to Chas. Colclough. The Caswell Sound Marble Company applied for a long lease on purchasing terms of land at Caswell Sound, the matter was postponed pending further information. The Olago Agricultural Society’s Show takes place on the 22nd and 23rd November There are over 1700 free railway passes issued in the colony. Some disclosures of an irregular character are being brought out at the inquiry into tbs management of the Wellington hospital, London, August 22 Wool sales opened to'day. Good scoured worth about same as at close of last, but for inferior classes prices were barely maintained. Ten Land Leaguers were arrested by the police and charged with murdering a family at Mullagbadruma a few days since. Arrests have been made on the information furnished by eye witnesses of the ouf rage. The men have been fully identified as the perpetrators of the crime. The Australians won the match against Somersetshire by one innings and nineteen runs. The last regiment of the Indian Contingency has left Bombay. The rumour current at Alexandria that the enemy were abandoning Kafradowar, is incorrect. From authentic information re ceived, the rebels are still entrenched there m great force. French opinion is that England’s action in Egypt is justifiable, and the European Press generally acquiesce in England’s occupation of Canal. Serapeum a town on the Canal, is occupied by British, and four guns captured, A number of Arabi’s officers are deserting him. Mahomed, formerly Minister of Works, has been arrested at Ismailia. Friendly interview has taken place between Sir Garnet Wolsely and Baron de Lesseps. The British have cut telegraph lines in various directions, and the Sultan is infuriated. A train full of cavalry have reinforced Kafradowar. The Canal is freely used, but is protected by torpedos. It is reported that Tripoli intends to reinforce and assist Arabi.
