Tuesday, August 8, 1882. Before Major Keddell, R. M. James Holt appeared, on the information of the police, with keeping his licensed house open after 12 o’clock on the night of the 29th of June, for the sale of drink. Evidence adduced from a number of witnesses went to show that on the evening m question Mr. Holt was entertaining a party of his friends, and that from eight in the evening no charge had been made for any drink supplied.

His worship said that the evidence hy many trustworthy anil respectable residents in the town proved one naively that no charge had been made for the refreshments supplied. The charge mast accordingly break down, and he regretted that it had been pressed on. Regarding the right of hotel keepers to entertain friends after the prescribed hours he knew of nothing to prevent it.
