The water police, from information received. boarded the mail steamer, at Auckland, on July 23. and arrested on a warrant James Martin Shepherd, f-'r uttering a forged promissory note for £250, purported to he signed hy Elizabeth Melton and Anthony Christopher, on the 23rd November at Timaru. Shepherd went up to San Francisco by the steamer, but somehow when the steamer was leaving again he was on hoard chatting, and was taken out to sea. In getting into the police boat here from the steamer he fell overboard, catching hold of Constable M’Donnell, who was dragged overboard also. They were rescued in five minutes. The Rev.
