CROMWELL QUARTZ MINING COMPANY, BENDIGO.
At the last half-yearly meeting of shareholders, held in Dunedin, on the I4th inst, the following report f-om the mining manager was read and adopted : —As requested, [ send you a report on mine and machinery. The principal part of the work thnt has been done in the mine for the past six months lias been dead work, such as driving levels, sinking winze, etc. The 430 ft. level (lowest level) is now driven a distance of 610 ft. from No. 2 shift eastward, carrying the reef nearly all the way, but of poor quality. I expect after driving 15'ift. further tn strike the block of stone which I have been crushing from this last month, which is dipping eastward ; fr m this level I will have 90ft of backs f r the first 200 ft., afterwards 130 ft. The position of this block is between the 320 ft. level and the 430 ft., and a continuation of tho shoot of stone that was worked fully two yeais ago. 32 ft. level: The last 2001t., which was done by contract, was also dead work, small blocks of stone coming in occasionally, but of no consequence. I was obliged tn discontinue this level, owing to striking a large body of water, which is a good indication of a block of stone being ahead. This level I purpose going on with again after the water abates. It is with pleasure that I have to inform you that within this last month there is a decided improvement in the mine, ami I trust to be iblo to give you monthly cakes in future as formerly. As tho winter is now on, 1 don't intend crushing any next month, weather being too cold. Wnen the battery is stopped, I purpose overhauling No. 2 shaft, which requires a little repair ; when this is done I will commence crushing again, I would recommend the siuking of mam shaft to present lowest level—viz., 430 ft.—for the future woiking of the mine All the machinery in connection with mine—that is, battery, winding and pumping gear—is in good order and giving satisfaction.
