,[By Telegraph.] July 13. Patrick Garmon, St. Bathans, had a narrow escape from being burnt to death Saturday last. It appears he went home late at might, and having made himself a cup of tea went to bed. He was wakened up by the tflamea and had but just time to escape be. fore the roof fell In. Gannon is badly burnt •aSput the head. Vinegar Hill diggings is looking splendid. Learmonth and party washed up on Saturday last, after four rneriths running, with the result of five hundred outtces. Morgan and Hughes, -another party, have a seam ■that averages five pennyweights to the shovel. They expect when they wash up to get fully three thousand ounces Mr. Geo. Fache’s sale of horses and cattle to-day was a success. Prices realised fair tfor the times. Tire new lock-up and police stables are nearly completed. Both buildings are great improvements on the old ones, and there is some amount of speculation among the usual habitues of lock-up’s as to who •will have the honour of occupying it for tho first time. At the R.M. Court, Blacks, G«o. Field, Ida Valley, was fined £s® and costs for slygrog selling. Verdicts for £ls and £2O and costs were •given in the cases Mclntosh v. Hamilton, ■and Harrington v. Spain, cattle trespass .damages. The former claimed £3O, and the latter £BO. At the Warden’s ‘Court the two sp'-cral •claims of 30 acres on the deep lead were granted. St Batmans, July 13. A sad accident occurred near here yesterday to a man named Donald Glass. He was driving a thrashing machine acoss the Mauuherikia River about 5 p. m., when he •fell and received a contussed wound on his back. The accident was witnessed by several people, and be was immediately taken to St. Bathans, but died before reaching here. Deceased was supposed to bo intoxicated at the time.
