DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM

A fatal mishap occurred last Tuesday to a son of Captain Bussell, marine surveyor, who died under chloroform whilst having some teeth extracted by Mr ,1. P. Armstrong. The chloroform was administered' by Dr Burns, and not more than 20 drops used, hut its (-fleet was fatal very shortly af f or application, as the child never recovered consciousness. Ho was about 10 yrs. of age. and became insensible very quickly under the influence of the drug. Dr Burns then remarked to Mr Armstrong that he had better extract the teeth at that moment. The opporatinn was accordingly performed and the child was afterwards lifted on to the sofa and endeavours made to restore him This proving unavailing, Mr Armstrong went to obtain a galvanic battery, and. took the opportunity of calling in the assistance of lies Alexander and Stenlmuse, They, however, could do noth, ing to restore animation, as the hoy was quite dead, the direct cause being paralysis of the heart. This is the first occurrence of the kind that, has taken place during Mr Armstrong’s practice, which has cxtomlo 1 over many y ars, and ho is of course greatly concerned, although ho had no hand Jin administering the elder form.
