COLLIERY ON FIRE.
The coal pit owned by Mr C.T. Mari", and known as Dairy Creek Colliery took fire on Wednesday evening. The iiro broke out among a heap of dross in one of the old drives which had not been built up, and spread rapidly to a seam of coal 40ft thick, 20ft of which was burning when last seen. Strenuous efforts were at first made to put the fire out; hut without success, as it was impossible to work in the pit for any length of time owing to the heat and gas ; besides which there is no water-raee of any importance near it. It is expected to burn for four or five months yet.
The above information was obtained from those who were in the pit while in was on fire. On our reporter visiting the colliery for farther particulars, Mr Marie stated that he was not aware of the pit being on fire. However that may be, the fact remains that tho mouth of the pit and every crevice within 50 yards is blocked up, notwithstanding which the air is heavy with the fumes of sulphur.
