(From our own Correspondent.) Dunedin, Thursday. A grand dinner was given to Mr Hislop, Under Secretary for Education, last evening prior to his leaving for the Old Country. The racing stud of Sir Joshua Bell, of Brisbane, has been sold for £IO,OOO. Twenty-seven owners have made the final payments for the Australian Cup. William Why took, [blacksmith, at Puerua near IBnlclutha, yesterday [committed suicide by hanging himself in his smithy. Jamss Bloomfield, formerly in caol for burglary, was captured at midnight at Epsom, near Auckland. [He made an entry into Mr Buller’s residence there. Mr Bailer was roused by a noise and got up and encountered the burglar in the hall who fled. He was pursued by Mr Bailer for two miles in his nightshirt (sic) and captured after a severe struggle. Bloomfield was discovered to be a mate of Phmime’-’s. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Drug Company yesterday, the report and balance sheet wei e adopted. The Company pays a dividend of ten per cent. Gold was struck yesterday by Heron and party on aflat above the Woodstock, on the south of the Hokitika river. Sinking, 50ft depth of wash dirt. 3ft to 4ft. It is estimated to yield five pennyweights to the load. Several shafts are going down and a good many claims are pegged out. The flat, though in the immediate vicinity of the terrace workings close to the river, has been untried and is of considerable extent, it is believed that there was some excitement in town to-day on the news being received. LaterWarden Giles visited the ground rushed at Woodstock and .a prospect of one dish was washed out in his presence which gave from three to four grains of gold. .Several other dishes were subsequently washed by miners giving a similar result. A large number of claims have been pegged out and a dozen business sites have been marked off already. Ar, the Land Board yesterday the request of Meikle-John for reduction of rent of run at Wakatipu was recommended to the favorable consideration of Government.
The application of T. G. Betts was granted on condition he paid the rent up to present time. A man named Anthony, evidently deranged in mind, astonished the people in Chirstchurch this afternoon by distributing bank notes to passers by. He was subsequently arrested when it appeared he had given away £125, of which £25 were afterwards recovered.
A large tire occurred at Gore this morning. Watson’s Hotel and Haxton and Beatties harrow factory were destroyed. The hotel was insured for £OSO and the factory for £701). The Mirzipore (?) has anived at Melbourne from London with scarletina on hoard and she has been quarantined.
Telegrams are to hand announcing that Mr Evans, special correspondent of the Manchester Guardian , has been arrested at Ramusafor alleged collusion with Dalmatian insurgents, and is confined in gaol. Professor Ulrich's party, that started for Pegasus, Stewart Island, last week, has returned to Invercargill. The professor’s report is said to be of the most highly favourable description. He declares that he has seen nothing so promising as the Pegasus country for gold since ho left Bailor it. It is believed that there are thousands of acres auriferous on the south-west portion of tue island.
