Dunedin, February 23

The races to-day were an unqualified success ; one of the largest gatherings at our annual meeting. The weather was glorious, and the racing geaeial'y pretty* good. Agent won hurdle race Clarence and Rocket next. Nonsense, Vanguard, and Turqvimu were first, second, and third for the Champagne Stakes. The cup was a surprise, Lady Emma winning with greatest ease, beating Libeller second. Chancellor third. Won by three lengths in Brain. The quickest time for Dunedin Cup. The victory was very popular as Sir H. Robinson is an honest supporter of racing. Laertes won tho Selling Race, beating Playboy and Dolly Bar won. Nautilus cantere I home easily-for Publicans’ Handicap, Luna second, Titaaia third.

Tire Maiden Plate was won by a short head by Ace i f Hearts, colt from Gitania. An inquest was held to-day on the bodies of the children bur ed at the tire in Smith Street. A verdict was returned that they were accidentally bnrnftd.

A man named Henderson, in the employ of Strachen, brewer, to-day was charged at Pollen Court with having evaded the Beer Untv Aet and was fined five pounds and costs; an.aiher charge against Strachen resulted in his lining lined forty pounds. The foot races yesterday between Hill add Oliver resulted in Oliver winu'ng the 100 and 200 yards races, ami Hid the 150 yards. The Lyttelton election ease decided today that Mr Allwright retains his seat. A letter from Kawarau settlors was rea 1 at the Land Board requesting withdrawal of runs from sale ; and it was resolved : The Board regrets that owing to the lateness of present memorial they are unable to recommend the Government to comply with the request

Regarding Messrs Attfiold and Welsford’s application, the Board decided they were unable to consider applic ition without tracing of the hand.

Tho application of John Bennett for a mineral lease, Fraser district, was granted. There is no European news of interest.
