VINCENT COUNTY COUNCIL,
(CONTINUED FROM our LAST.)
The first statutory meeting of the New Council was held at Clyde on Thursday, 23rd uist. Present—Vincent Pyke (Chairman), Crs M'Kellar, Pitches, .VUPhail, Macgimiis, Colclottgh, and Jolly. The Engineers report on contracts was read and received.
He-olved, on division, —That it is advisable to retain the services of Inspector of Alexandra Bridge till the completion of the structure.
Reports on bridges and ferries was read and received.
An application by Messrs Jeremiah Diuhimv and Co. fir an ext.ention of thiee ni' nths for completion of Alexandra bridge was granted.
The Engineers report in reference to the removal of Rocky Point Bridge was read and received.—During the consideration of the report, it was stateil that the water was again making im ier the bridge, and the possibbi ies w. re not, so remote but that by additions, it might be used fir and answer its original purpose. CrColelongh said if it ever was icmoved it should lie to Dead Mans Point.
Cr MTvellar thought unless some use was made of it shortly, the better thing to do won hi be to iar it and then fire it. Letter was read from Mr Dewar, holder of a deferred ent lease on Hawea Flat asking Council to open a road to his holding now fenced in by Mr Cooper an adjoining holder; also one from Mr Cooper, stating that the road referred to was through his purchased property, and that not having been allowed for area of road he would object to throw it open. Cr M ‘Phail said there was no need for the toad in question to be opened, as there was another mid better and shorter road open to Mr Dewar’s holding. Ihe whole question of roads, and the right to interfere with the roads in the county, was brought up and argued, during which the Chairman sai l as the law stood the Council had no right over any road except it was recorded on the maps of the Survey Department, and of which there was only some 10 or >2 miles. He said ha h.a l drawn the attention of the Government to the position, who had premised during the next Pailiamentto take such action as to the remedv it.
In reference to the road through the land adjoining Mr Marie’s, and the proposed new road by the Waste Lauds Board, it was resolved—l hat the District Surveyor he instructed to proceed with the survey the new road without delay.
Cr Pitches said it was currently rumored it his district that it was unsafe to cross Clyde Bridge with a greater load than four tons ; if there was no truth in the rumor, lie said it, should he publicly contradicted. Cr Pitches also desired to ask if it was the custom to supply storekeepers and others with vouchers iu blank, though duly Certified to
The Chairman explained that with regard to tile Clyde Bridge it was capable of carrying any weight that was ever liable to go onto it; Midas to the vouchers it was a pure fabrication, and that to his knowledge a certified voucher in blank never left the office.
Cr Jolly said he was informed that the Lake County authorities had been collecting dog tax>>s from within the Vincent Countv honed,ary. The Clcik «« instructed to make every enquiry,and then write to Lake County demanding a re fund. Cr Colclongh asked if the revenue of minei’s rights taken out in the Cromwell otlice for Cardvona, belonging to Lake or Vincent Comity,

Cr Jolly, Hon Treasurer, read his financial statement, shewing a debit balance at date of £2987 10s 10d; amount dueon contracts. £•1450 8s od, total indebtedness’ t7443 18s lOcl,
On the motion of Cr McKellar, Cr Jolly was elected Honorary Treasurer-for the ensuing term.
I’he Chairman, Hon. Treasurer, and Cr Colelniigh were appointed to sign cheques. Ci Colclongh, McPhail, and McGiuness were appointed a Finance Committee. Accounts amounting to LCS 7a 2d were passed for payment. Tenders were then opened in Committee and the, following accepted:—Contract No 84, O, Pearce; No 80, D. Millan; No 87, L. ■huger; No 88. carrying Clyde punt to Luggate, R Mcf elUnd.
Applications to register 114 head, making a tota' of 262 on the Cromwell Conimonagel and 58, making n total of 3411 on the Dunstoii Commonage, were granted. Resolved, on the motion of Cr McPhail seconded by Cr Pitches—That councillor for the ensuing term be paid travelling exit uses at the ■ ate of Is per mile one way, and LI Is for each day of sitting -The meeting closed, j
