POLITICAL GOSSIP

Mr Vincent Pyke has intimated his intention of again soliciting the suffrages of the Dunstan district. He has already visited Tapanui, and the lower portion of the district, and on Saturday he is expected to arrive in Clyde. Influential committees have been formed in mostly all the large centres of population to further his cause. Mr \V. Fraser, who has decided to contest the seat with Mr Pyke, finds a few supporters: He visited Tapanui. and other places, and’may be expected in this division of the district during the week. A requisition in his favor has been going the rounds, bat from what we can hear it has not been numerously signed. For the County elections, there is no great stir. Mr Pyke notifies himself for the Dunstan Riding ; Mr MacOinms we believe will have a walk over for Earns clenglt ; Mr J. Stronach again woes Matakauui ; and Mr J. Pitches asks for renewal of the confidenlies of the ratepayers of Manuberikia Riding. No others have as yet publicly announced themselves, though it is rumored that Mr J. C. Chappie will buckle ou his armour and do battle with Mr Pitches forfjthe honor of representing Manuhevikia.

For the election of Licensing Commissioners not a word is heard from anys quarter. This apathy and indifference is strange, considering the importance of the positions ; and it is to be hoped that no haphazard selection will be made, but that the maturest thought will be given to the qaeslioujietore any decision is arrived at.
