The Waiwera Hot Springs and the hotel of Robert Graham have been sold to a southern company for about L 15.000, and will be continued as a sanatorium.
A shark 18ft. long has been inspecting the palisading of the public baths. Mr Edward Stafford, solicitor, announces his intention to contest one of the Wellington seats at the coming election.
It has been decided to form a company, in Christchurch,with a capital of L30,000,t0 promote the various industries in connection with linseed.
The libel case of Ivess v. O’Keilly occupied the Police Court during the whole afternoon, and was adjourned till Tuesday, to enable the defendant, who is a solicitor, to obtain counsel. The Tui is still on the bank at the mouth of the Waiters River. It has been decided to repair her before the attempt is made to launch her.
Natives do not appear to be acting under any definite instructions from Te Whiti in the matter of erecting fences, and consequently they have made no determined stand against the Constabulary. The Parihaka meeting commenced to-day. It has been noticed that the Natives have not yet proceeded to Parihaka this month in their customary manner namely, with bullock drays well loaded with provisions, but the majority of them have travelled on foot.
From the Parihaka meeting there is no direct information to hand, but from a reliable source it is said Te Whiti’s speech to-day was the most pacific one he has ever delivered. There were over 1000 Maori men capable of bearing arms present at the meeting, Te Whiti is reported to have said there might be 20,000 pakehas settled on the land, but it would be their sepulchre.
