THE DUNSTAN ELECTORATE.

TO TUB EDITOR, Sib, —An incident happened hero tho other day which I think should not pass avithout notice. By some means or other, a rumor was spread round tho district: that a telegram had been received from our member in Wellington, stating that tho Government was going to enlarge tho comities, and that Maniototo was to oitend to Chatto Creek; and, to make tho hoar a little more exciting, a letter was received from the member at Clyde, and another from Blacks, by onr member (Mr Stomach), requesting that gentlemen to call a meeting of the ratepayers at once. I thought this news too good to bo true, and 1 have no doubt but that a majority of the rali-payo'S would bo most happy to amalgamate with tho Maniototo, behoving they would receive more justice than they have obtained from Vincent County Council. At the last meeting of that body, a mcmn lal was presented by Mr Stronacn, on behalf of the miners hero, asking for £SO, being one half of tho amon it for repairing the Tinke'S sludge channel. When tho motion was brought on, tiie member for the Dunstan hiding said he thought the mine s deserved support, and would -rote for it, if the like was never asked for again. The member for Alexandra could not vote forpt, slating that it it wee granted the Council would bo inundated avith simi'ar applications. I would simply ask this gentlemen whether Iho applications from this place or from Alexandra are most likely to inundate tho Council (commencing with tho bridge). Tho member for Blanks, being more pious Ilian tho rest, con'd not vote for it, as he had tendered a similar application from two mines at German Hill, to construct a private tail-race, and had be n refused T, for one, should like to see the amount ho has received for B'aeks since he became member for it, and compare it wish what we have received. All tho minors hero have to maintain both their tail- and head races. Besides, tiie sludge channel is not tho least benefit to tho minors situated as it is from three to four miles from tho workings. Two-thirds of tho ratepayers hero arc miners, and, considering the amount of revenue wo pay into the county funds, we wore justly entitled to receive tho amount asked foi.—l am, etc., JOHN MELLOR. Tinkers, August 16.
