OPHIR.

Next to tho proposal of the Government to dismember the Dunstan district, and parcelling it into the three adjoining districts, which—despite the lying assertion of the Manuherikia correspondent of the New Zealand “Times,” published in Wellington - has created no little feeling here, and is in direct opposition to every interest of this portion of the Dunstan, both politically and commercially ; the deep lead at Blacks No. 3 is the next' in importance, and scarcely anything else can be talked about. During the week a party of six have marked out and applied for an extended area on the lead of 35 acres, and I believe their intention is to set to work immediately. The party possess whim, slabs for shaft and all other material, so there will be no delay in their operations. A public meeting was also held on Wednesday evening, at Garuns Hotel, Ophir, to take steps to form a company to work the lead. A goodly number were present, and Mr J. C. Jones occupied the chair, and cxplainad the objects of the meeting. Mr J. Pitches said he had been connected with two companies that worked on the lead some years ago, and accordingly had some knowledge of it. One company, he said, had obtained over L3OOO worth of gold for about seven months’ working, the other over L200I) worth in four months, but each party broke up, not for the want of gold but through quarrels. After further discussion, it was resolved that a company, with a capital of L3OOO, be formed. A provisional directory was elected, and it was arranged for them to meet on Saturday evening next. I shall?watch the progress of the company, and will keep you posted.
