The Secretary was instructed to write to the Cromwell Jockey Club, asking them to ro-consider their decision not to havo a Spring Meeting, as it would tend to the success of racing in the district if meetings were hold at Alexandra, Cromwell and Clyde. It was decided to delay arranging the programme and date of meeting until a reply from the Cromwell Club was received. Several gentlemen were proposed as new members of the club, and elected, and the meeting terminated.
THE OTAGO CENTRAL RAILWAY. A largo and influential meeting of merchants desirous of promoting the construction of the above lino (says the “ Herald ’’) was held in Dunedin on Tuesday. Amongst those present were—Messrs Bathgate (in the chair), Turnbull, Wilson, Larnaoh, V. Pyke, Mackerras, Marshall, D. Reid, and others.
Mr Pyke gave a statement of what had been done in Wellington in regard to this matter, including an account of the interview which took place between the Otago members and the Ministers on the subject. He also informed the meeting that Mr Brogden had made inquiries in regard to the nature of the work and its cost, with the view of engaging in the work if the concessions of the Government were suitable. Mr Proudfoot had also telegraphed to Government on the subject.
A discussion ensued as to what course should bo followed, and eventually resolved that no further action should bo taken until the proposals of the Government were embodied in a Bill. The meeting at the same time expressed the decided opinion that the Government was not doing justice to Otago by refusing to continue the work on the line, as theCrownland through which tho lino would pass would be sufficient to repay the cost of the railway threefold. Eventually the following resolution was passed That inasmuch as tho Government are bringing into Parliament a measure to provide for the construction of main branch lines of railway, the meeting agree to aw’ait the introduction of such measure. " Mr Pyke promised to communicate to the meeting tho provisions of tho Government Bill as soon as placed before the House.
