Several men went to the wreck with boats to render assistance. They found the vessel a total wreck, and that all hands except one had been drowned. The name of the survivor is Christian. He was found on the beach insensible, and was taken to the fishermens huts and taken care of.

At the time of the accident the Pakeha was bound from Kaipara to Dunedin with a cargo of bulk timber. The vessel was valued at £I3OO. and was of 174 tons register. Her oaptoin was married, and leaves a wife but no chddren. The first mate '-as unmarried. The owners estimate their loss above insurance at £3OO.
