London, May 24. News has been received from Canada that a terrible accident has occurred near Lonclon-on-the-Thames, in the province of Ontario. An excursion steamer with 'several hundred persons on board capsized, and 175 perished. May 25. The course of business in the House of Commons is again being seriously impeded by the Irish members, who have revived their obstructive tactics towards the various measures now before the’Houae. The trial of the editor of the German Socialist organ Die Frieheit, issued in Loudon, for publishing an article eulogising the assassination of the Czar, was concluded (today. He was found guilty, but sentence wasdeferre I.
May 2G. T Recent news from Ireland states that a want of harmony is apparent in the working of the Land League. The discord has shown it»elf in open discussions between several of the leading members of the League Notwithstanding the arrests which have been made in Ireland under the Coercion Act, the power of the Land League continues to be felt throughout the country. Meetings under its auspices are still held in agitation of the land question, and it is rumored that the Government in consequence intends to instruct the Viceroy to pr ihibit all meetings of the League in Ireland. May 29.
News is to hand from Ireland chat serious riots have occurred at Mitohelstown, in County Cork. Twelve thousand (sic) peasants assembled there to oppose the service of writs for the ejectment of some tenants, and upon the police arriving on the scene fighting of a very severe character took place. After much bloodshed on both sides the rioters were dispersed, and the eviction of the tenants was finally completed. The Irish Land League is daily increasing its agitation throughout the country, and is showing signs that it will oppose any attempt to prohibit its meetings. May 29.
Rumors that complications are likely to arise between Russia and Germany consequent upon the accession of the Czar Alexander 111, are attracting attention through out Europe, .the growing coldness between the two countries being commented upon in diplomatic circles at the present time.
