BRITISH AND FOREIGN.
London, May 19. A daring Fenian outrage was perpetrated at Liverpool, an attempt being made to blow up the po'ice-station by dynamite. The bomb exploded, and the explosion was a terrific one. It was heard all over the city. Fortunately no lives were lost, but considerable injury was done to the station. The windows were all smashed by the concussion, and the building was otherwise damaged. Mr Gladstone is recovering from his recent indisposition, and is now able to transact business.
At the wool auction to-Hay, 10,000 bales were offered. Th“re was a good demand generally, and full prices were realised. Telegrams have been received at Constantinople from Smyrna to the effect that Midhat Pasha was arrested to day, the French and other foreign Consuls having refused to afford him an asylum from the Ottoman ofßceis of justice. May 20. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britannia 2,130,000 quarters. Garibaldi has written a letterto the Press with reference to the treaty recently signed by the Bey of Tunis and the commander of the French forces, iu which he declares that the annexation of Tunis by France would be an insult to Italy, and that the French policy in that respect is threatening to the Italian interests. At a banquet in the City yesterday, the Marquis of Salisbury made a speech, in the course of which he referred to the Irish Land Bill in disparaging terms, severely denouncing the Irish policy of the Government.
May 21. Several important arrests have lately been made in Ireland. Among them is a Homan Catholic priest, the Secretary of the Land League, and a mercantile clerk in Dublin. May 23.
The condition of Ireland continues to cause grave anxiety to the Government. Six flying columns of troops have been organised to assist in enforcing the service of writs in the disaffected districts.
The Sultan has deposed the Bey of Tunis. The French Government have resolved to uphold the Bey in possession of the Tunisian Throne.
It has transpired that Earl Granville, has referred to the Tunisian Treaty in recent despatches to the French Government, and protests against the acts of France.
