The police at Auckland have been instructed to enforce the provisions of the Employment of Females Act. Mr W. Day, City Council Clerk at Auckland, has been appointed a Mormon Elder, and resigns his appointment, and goes to Utah.

Petty robberies and burglaries are on the increase at Auckland. A gang, it is believed, are in the city. At Wellington, Whitelaw (late Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum) stands committed for trial for ill-treatment, but is out on bail.

It is said that the Government are taking steps to prevent any land along the projected West Coast line being alienated or leased. This is in consequence of efforts being made to obtain portions of land on the route by certain individuals. At Auckland, the charges against Mr Abbott for holding sweeps on the races have failed.
