The Poet's Corner.
A VOICE FROM THE NEVIS.
Am—“ A Life on the Ocean Wave." (By Furtraokr. ) Have you heard of the rabbiters Working on the Hawkaburn run : To kill the poor little bunny Without a dog or gnn? f. '. Chorus. •" 'f ‘■“ c A life in a rabbiters’ camp, A home on the N“vis Hills ; With nothing but mutton and bread. We'll have to take Holloway’s pills. We number some thirty or more, Including the cook and boss ; And to find how we all stow away, I guess you would be at a loss, A life, etc.
We sleep four men in a tent—- ' The dimensions a’-e eight by ten ; And when we have all turned in Th- cc’s no room to spare, you’ll ken. A life, etc. We've men from all parts of the world, We include nearly every trade, And we have some who, now they’re here, Wished that at home they had stayed. A life, etc. On* wages are ten hob a-week, And a penny a skin beside ; That’s when they are sent to the station. After each one has been dried.
A life, etc. You should see us at feeding time, ’Twould make you open your eyes 1 We hover around the meats Like so many blue-bottle flies. A life, etc. “ Isn’t it painful,” you’d say, “ To see the way we are fixed, Without any Worcester sauce, Or any of Morton’s mixed ! ”
A life, etc. We get dough, boys, three times a week, And, to give the cook his due, At times he’ll open our bowels With a moat infernal stew. A life, etc. We poison all in a straight line, That is, as straight as we can ; And every one has to watch His right or left hand man. A life, etc. And if a man fossicks on gronnd That has not been opened by Mac, He just has to give up his bag, And in return gets the sack. A life, etc. Hurrah ! little bunny, we about. Breed just as fast as you can ; You’re the only friend we know To give food to the working man. A life, etc.
Then this shall be our motto, As round the camp we rally, “Skin, boys, skin again, Ami speak according to your tall v." A life, etc.
