THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
LoS’D in, February 14th. The sculling race between Edward Haulm and Elias Layco k fir LSDO a-side, the Championship nf Eng'aud, and the “Sportsman” Challenge Cun, took plane today over the usual course m the Thames, between Putney and Mortlake The weather was (hie and the water smooth. The Batiks of the river were lined with spectators throughout the course Batting was 4tol on Hanlon. A good start, was effected. Hanlon com men cod with 35 an! Laycoek with 38 strokes a minute. Hanlon at once took the lea-1, and was a length or more ahead at Simmons’s Yard, an 1 two lengths ahead at the mile-post. At this point, haycock made a splendid spurt and Hanlon's lead was for a time materially decreased, hut, the latter again rapidly drew ah, ad, and was four lengths in advance of haycock, at Barnes Bridge. He continued to increase his lead, and reached the winning post several lengths ahead, having held the lead from the start to finish, and completing the dis tance in 25 miiuiloi 41 secon Is.
