DEATH OF LIEUT COL VAUGHAN.
A cablegram has been received in Sydney announcing the death of Lieut.-Colonel Vaughan, of Courtfiold, Monmouth, and father of His Grace the Archbishop of Sydney. The Express gives the following sketch of his life:—“ The deceased gentleman, who was horn in 1808. was brother of the Catholic bishop of Plymouth; and was father of His Grace the Archbishop of Sydney, and tho Right Rev. Herbert Vaughan, Bishop of Salford. Lieut.Colnnel John Fiaueis Vaughan was a Justice of tho Peace for the counties of Gloucester, Monmouth, Hereford, and Mayo, and Deputy-Lieutenant for Monmouthshire, and was Lieut.-Colonel in the Monmouthshire militia; He married in Jnjy 1830; the daughter of Mr John Rolls, of 'lhe Hetldre; Monmouth, and. had eight arms and five daughters. Seven of the sons entered the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church, and four of the daughters became nun-, the fifth dying in infancy The other son married the daughter of Mr John Shanahan, of Victoria. Lieut.-Col. Vaughan married again in February, 1800, Ilia second wife being the daughter of Mr Joseph Weld, df Ltllwdrth Castle; Dorset, and by her he had two children, both of whom died in infancy. Among Lieut.Col. Vaughan’s brothers dml sisters, two brothers entered tho priesthood and two of the sisters became nuns. Another sister was married to Mr Thomas Weld Blundell, of Lancaster. It will be seen that the family Are related by marriage to Sir E. A. Veld, late Governor of Tasmania.”
