Referring .to Mata’s running in the V.RC. Handicap, (he Argus of the Bt,h says “ Nine horses started for the V. R.C. Handicap, for which Napper Tandy was first favourite for a whije, hu't Mata was so persistently hacked that he sta-tel at 5 to 2 against him. The backers of Mata evidently knew what they were doing, as the horse won comfortably in the fastest time on record. The stewards were not satisfied with the way Mata had been run, and called on Mr Vallance to explain the horse’s running - in the Royal Pari Stakes on Thursday, when he finished absolutely last.” In its issue of the following day, the same journal savs “ The suspicious running of the horse Mata during tlie V R.O. Spring Meeting has met with prompt treatment at the hands of .the stewards. ..
