ALEXANDRA.

CoMJIU.NICaTF.D

Considerable excitement has been caused in Alexandra by the acbon of the Vincent County Poumlkeeper in making a raid on on the cattle withinthe municipal boundary. A public meeting was held on Wednesday evening to discuss the matter, when great indignation was expressed at tho arbitary action of the poumlkeeper. It was stated at the meeting that one cow was taken nut of the custody of the owner, who had to follow’ tho animal up to the pound and pay the fees before ho could regain possession of his beast, and another cow and calf were driven off freehold land. Some of the speakers proposed that warrants should bo applied for against the parties for eat tiestealing, but eventually, it was determined to submit a case to Mr Stout for his opinion, and in the event of his deciding that the action of the poundkeeper was illegal, that a test case should be brought before the K.M.’s Court, tho cost to be defrayed by subscription. As there ia every probability of the matter being made the subject of legal proceedings, I refrain from further comment.

Ed. I). T —We think onr respected correspondent is wrong in saying that the i aid was made by the Clyde pound-keeper. So far as wr. can understand, the commonage ranger has been making a general muster, and if there is any blame it must be laid at his door. If, as onr correspondent says, cattle have been removed from within the limits of the Alexandra boundary, there has evidently been a display of too much zeal either on the part of the ranger or those he employed. However, as the question is uut to be allowe Ito rest where it is, we do not feel called upon to make further comment.
