The Cromwell Argus reminds us of nothing so much as a whipped cat, savagely snarling because its scratchings are resented. Kvidently our contemporary cannot take his punishment man'ully. His wailings are so ludicrously plaintive that we would leave him alone, out of very pity, were not the public interests affected. But it is our
boundon duty to temper mercy with justice ; and before wo stay our hand our contemporary must amend bis manners and limit bis utterances We will not ask him to be wise. That would be seeking an impossibility. But we shall insist on his being truthful. To say that he is mendacious is only to repeat, in mild language, what everybody already knows, and what he would himself probably accept as high praise. We go further. Bitter without wit, and malignant without genius, ho is utterly and unscrnpulous'y dishonest in his writings. We charge Lira not only with the suppresaio veri, but also with tho sugyestio Jalai— the woist offence of the two. In plain English he not only suppresses the truth, but also suggests that which is false This is patent in every lino of his injurious publication ; and if tin people understand (heir own intcreds they will treat him as a common enemy. His pretence of caring for the welfare of Blacks and Alexandra is the flimsiest sham that ever was paraded before the communitv ; and bind indeed must men be if they fail to perceive it, or suffer themselves to be beguiled by it. Ilia discourtesy is equalled by bis rancour, ami both are exee'led by his ignorance; so much so indeed, that, were it not necessary to counteract the mischief which he seeks to effect, we would not stain eur columns by any reference to onr “ Cretian ” contemporary. And, as his “ biblical knowledge ” docs not appear to be extensive, wo refer him for an explanation of the phrase to Paul’s epistle to Titus lirst and twelfth.
