Thft New Zealand and Australian Land Company on their E lendale Estate (near Mat aura Bridge) have grown this season several hundred acres of Danish oats. They are now thrashing out for 'shipment to the Home country. The Mataura paper is informed that a sample of these oats was weighed last week, when a bushel measurement weighed oljlh. The ordinary fourbushel hags weighed 5} bushels and upwards, thus proving the adaptability of our soil for tho growth of this class of cereal.
The following is’ brought by the Suez mail :—“ Tho trial of t’>c directors of the Northern Counties of England Fire Insurance Company lasted eight days. Tho manager, James Crabtree, was sentenced to eighteen months’hard labor; Nesbitt, the auditor, to twelve months; Mills, H.alliMell, Clogg, au l 11. Crabtree, six months each ; and Smith and Cunliffe wero acquitted. The allegation was the issuing of a balance-sheet containing fictitious statements of the capital and assets.”
