(From the Melbourne Dailies.) The state of Ireland is alarming and distressing. A great fire has occurred at St. Petersburg by which twenty buildings weie destroyed and others damaged. Several religious riots have occurred in Ireland.
Intense excUementhasbeencreated owing to the discovery of a plot to blow up tho military barracks in the City of Cork, where a large number of troops have been concentrated owing to the threatening aspect of affairs. A tunnel was constructed commencing at a considerable distance from the barracks and extending to a point under the main building, where the greater portion of the soldiers were located. Here a large chamber had been opened and filled with several barrels of gunpowder, with a fuse attached ready for ignition. The military have since been reinforced, and with a view to prevent disturbances the city ia patroPed night and day by the troops. Since the lace acts of coercion in Ireland large purchases of arms are being made in that country, and trouble is expected after harvest, when the landlords will claim their hack rents.

It is contemplated to hold a grand demonstration of the ships of the British navy off one of the English ports at an early date.
