More of the unemployed were sent upcountry to the railway works from Christchurch, 'on the 18th instant. Altogether 1000 have been sent during the winter. During the past six years the rates annually collected in Christchurch have risen from L 4500 to LI 1,000. A Wellington telegram slates that His Excellency the Governor and Lady Robinson and suite will leave far England on the 3rd proximo. The Gas Company at Christchurch have declared a dividend of 7 per cent, for the last half year. At Christchurch, on the 20th instant, the new Tattersalls belonging to Messrs Matson and Co. was formally opened. It is the largest huildiug for stock sales south of the Line.
The Christchurch Tramway Company have ordered a tram car from a local firm iu order to test the ability of local manufacturers to compete with the imported article.
The reports that reach Christchurch from the country districts state that the past winter has been most favorable foi farmers The young wheat is looking well. It is estimated that the area under crop is not so great as last year. At Oamaru, Messrs J. and T. Meek, millers, have offered to give the Benevolent Society eight 501b bags of flour, and 8 2Slb bags of oatmeal each month during the next three months.
A terrific gale occurred at Christchurch, Titnaru, and Oamaru on the 20th instant, doing a considerable amount of damage. One of the results of the gale being the stoppage of telegraphic communication to the north of Christchurch.
