TRYING TO MAKE UP THE “RINT.”
At a recent meeting of the Duchess of Marllio rough's Relief Committee, two little hoys, half naked and barefooted, sought admission to Dublin Castle, stating that they had walked all the way of Skibberocn, in
the County of Cock, to plead for help to pay their father’s rent. g They said they were the sons of Pat M’Cniihy, of Cloneugger, in the parish of Caharag, near the town of Skihbereen. He had a bit of laud, but the times wore so bad ho could not pay the “ rint,” and ho owed LS Having gone round among the friends and neighbors, be could only scrape together 1.0. The two children, who were respectively twelve and fom teen years of age, thought they would “ ask the good Duchess of Marlborough ” to give “ daddy” L2. Away they started for Dublin, begging their fond and lodging, and inquiring their way from town to town. The journey, upwards of 200 miles, occupied three weeks. Touched with the narrative, t.hc Duchess promised to send their father the W nftiey were then by command of Her Grace taken to the elothcsrooin, and their tattered garments changed for a new suit of tweed each. Having been regaled with a substantial dinner, tlmy were brought before the ladies of the Committee, who rewarded the brave adventurers with a pocketful of silver. Oa the same day Mr Fitzgerald, assistant secretary to the Kelief-rFimd, wrote to ike Hew, .1. Wall, parish priest, enclosing a Post Ollice order for L2, payable to M’Carthy, the father of the boys.
