Brines George, the second son of the Prince of Wales, will be present at the opening o f the Melbourne Exhibtion, Mr Bradlaugh, in his protest to the House of Commons, points out that in his refusal to take the oath lie has been solely influenced by conscientious convictions, which, in cases of a similar nature, 'the House has not failed to respect.

There have been several extensive forest fires in the State of Mew Jersey, United States, extending ovci many miles of country. Much damage has been caused, and several villages destroyed. Serious riots have occurred in Saionica, an important seaport town situated at the head of the gulf of that name. The disturbances are attributed to tho embittered feelings and fanaticism excited between the Mahommedan and Greek population. Martial law has been proclaimed by the Turkish Governor, and vigorous measures adopted to protect life and property.

The town of Koubaix, in tho north of France, with a population of about 100,000, has been the scene of serious riots, arising out of strikes amongst the operatives employed in the manufacture of cotton fabrics, furniture, cloth, and other articles. Several establishments have closed, and much distress prevails. Tiic authorities have been compolle 1 to call upon the military to suppress tho disturbances.

Correspondence of considerable importance has taken place between the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Secretary Evarts, on the Newfoundland fisheries question. Tire late English secretary (the Marquis of Salisbury), denied that there were any grounds for tbo demand made for compensation on behalf of the American fisheries. He gave his views on the subject at considerable length. In reply, Mr Evarts entirely repudiated the views of the English Secretary of State, and further, in a letter, to President Hayes, urges that United States Government would be justified in adopting retaliatory measures in defence of the American fisherman. This serious declaration of Secretary Evarts has excited somewhat of a sensational interest in America, and a feeling of considerable surprise in England. The policy of the Liberal Government on the subject is looked forward to with unusual anxiety.

Earl Bcaconsfiehl has called a meeting of the Tor y party to consider what programme they will adopt in reference to coudcting the business of the Opposition.

London, May 27th. Tho London Press confirms a report which lias lately been circulated to the effect 'that the Ameership of Afghanistan Ins been offered to the Afghan pretender, Abdul Rahman Khan. The offer is said to have been made in consequence of Abdul Rahman’s friendly relations with the British Government, and in order to conciliate the Afghans and to maintain the dynasty of Host Mahomed. Tir- total reserve in notes and bullion in the I! mk of England is L15,750,00(1. At the avoid sales to-day 11,500 bales were offered—making a total of 300,700 catalogued since the opening- Tho tone of to-day's sales showed that piices were firmly maintained. The withdrawals from the sales to date amount to 14,000 bales. May 2Sth.

A Ministerial Bill has been introduced into the House of Lords by the Lord High Chancellor, for the purpose of permitting the buiial of Dissenteis in church-yard cemeteries without the Church of England service.

The ship Antipodes, bound from Sydney to London, which put in here recently in a leaky state, and to discharge' cargo, will probably have to be condemned, London, May 28th,

New Zealand wheat (ox ship), 495; Adelaide wheat (ex warehouse), 01s ; Adelaide fiour (ex warehouse), 375. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,770,000 qrs. At the wool sales to-day 8500 bales were offered, making a total of 309,200 catalogued since the opening. The tone of the sales showed a firm and aotlee demand.

A European Conference will be held at Berlin next month. At present the questions to bo discussed will be limited to those connected with the Greek frontier. It is, however, uncertain whether the discussion will be extended to other questions.
