The Dunstan Time. FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1880.

Beneath the rule of men entirislyjurt*// pen is mightier than </iCSWORD.

On looking over our copy of the Government Gazette of the 15th inst., we were surprised to find by the return of land in cultivation and agricultural produce for February, 1579-SO, that Vincent County had fallen off in number of acres cultivated and quantity produced. The figures were startling alter all we had heard and all wo

had notified of the late good harvest, indeed, so much so. that we called on the Superintendent Collector, (Major Keddell) who fortunately was in a position to satisfy our enquiries. It appears the Collector at Blacks had divided his sub-district, taking the boundaries of tho ridings of Matakauui and Manuherikia, and given two returns, placing the return for the riding of Mataknnui in one portion of his book, and for the riding of Manuherikia in another, and this latter riding, which by tho copy is the richest in tho County was overlooked in compiling the entire statement. We are now enabled to put before our readers the correct account, and which doubtless will appear in a subsequent number of the Gazette :—Total tumber of-holdings, 202. Extent of land broken’up, but not under crop, 1140 acres. Area sown in wheat, 1055 ; estimated produce, 29,700 bushels. Sown in oats for green feed or hay, 0584 acres ; for grain, 3,974 acres, estimated produce, 121, 080 bushels. Sown in barley, 1254 acres, estimated produce bushels. Sown in hay, 220 acres, average yield, 404 tons. In grasses, after having been broken up, 1332 acres. In grasses, not previously broken up, 834 acres. In potatoes, 230 acres, estimated yield. 888 tons. Other crops, 245 acres. Total number of acres under crop, including sown grasses—9,s6o acres.
