THE SHOCKING MURDER IN NORTH DUNEDIN.
The trial of Robert Butler, charged with the commission of this crime, was commenced at the Supreme Court, Diinedin, on the 15th inst., before His Honour Judge Williams. Over thirty witnesses were examined on behalf of the Crown, the prosecution closing its ease on Friday night. There was no further evidence adduced than what was given at the Police Court enquiry. Tile principal feature of the trial was the able manner in which the prisoner conducte 1 his own case. On Saturday morning he commenced his defence, which lasted, including the dinner hour adjournment, six hours. The Judge in summing up evidently leaned towards the prisoner. The jury retired at C o’clock and returned into Court a few minutes after 9 with a verdict of “Not Guilty.” The he; iring of other charges against the prisoner was adjourned till next Monday. It is expected the further charge of murder against him will bo tried at Christchurch.
