ALEXANDRA.

A concert in aid of the funds of the Library was held in the Town HaFl on the 25th inst. The entertainment was got up by the Golden Stream Lodge, and like all the affairs o* the kind winch the Good Templars have taken in hand here, it was ■carried out mskt successfully. Nearly all our local amateurs gave their services on the occasion, and Miss Hastie, from Clyde, in the course of the evening sang several ballads with much sweetness and expression, particularly the song “ Bide-a-wee," which was very well rendered. “Good-bye at the door,” by Mrs Aldred, was very well sung, also two ducts by Miss Finlay and Mrs Lothian. Messrs Austen, Williams, and Aldred also sang several solos in the course of the eveuing, which contributed greatly to the success of the entertainment. The Alexandra Glee Club, which now musters a large number of members, sang several glees and choruses in a manner which showed that the members had received careful training. Perhaps their best effort was “ Ye shepherds tell me,” which was sung in very good time, and the voices blended together most harmoniously. Mrs Lothian presided at the pianoforte with her accustomed ability, and.in addition to, playing all the accompaniments, gave two solos “ Alice ” and “A Merry Peal” in a style that showed a perfect mastery.of the instrument. The entertainment was brought to a close by the company singing “God save the Queen ” Altogether the entertainment was a very creditable one, and the proceeds will make a handsome addition to the funds of the Library. After the ■concert was over die hall was cleared, and about forty couples engaged in dancing to the music of the Brass Band, and it was not till 4 a.ra. that the party finally broke «!>• ... . ~ , The Council Lave accepted-the tender of Mr 0. J’atcliffo to put the ceiling on the Town Hall. It is to be of half-inch timber tongned and grooved, and w licit completed will, make a great improvement to the acoustic properties of the.building. At the present time it is with the utmost difficulty that persons far removed from the stage can distinguish the sense of the words used ■on it. Mr Harvey, the Clerk of the Court, will in future attend at Alexandra every Monday. This will be a great convenience to the public, as, under the present system, if there happened to be a number of cases before tbo Court, minors and others having business to transact with the Registrar were often considerably delayed in consequence of his time being taken up with the business of the Court.
